Micro CT
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
The Quantum FX - microCT system delivers high speed X-ray imaging for ex vivo and in vivo samples. It offers the flexibility researchers need by delivering the functionality to perform longitudinal studies, across a wide range of species, with fast, low-dose scanning and superior spatial resolution.
There are different scanning modes: high throughput (18 seconds per scan) or high resolutions scan (100-120 seconds per scan). Largest field of view (FOV) 73 mm with voxel size of 148 micron and smallest FOV of 5 mm with voxel size of 10 micron.
Software allows to compensate cardiac and respiratory mechanical instability during imaging.
Case Study: capuchin monkey
The specimen is a capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) that was collected on an expedition to British Guiana in 1959 and has been stored since then in the research collection of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. The goal was to measure the pelvic bones dimensions for the study of the evolution of birth difficulties in primates, looking at how tight is the fit of the newborn in the mother's birth canal across primates, to see how unique humans are in this respect.
Images were acquired by Kseniya Korobchevskaya for a collaboration project between University of Roehampton and Natural History Museum, University of Oxford coordinated by Dr Lia Betti and Amoret Spooner.
Case Study: Neolithic Dog
Example of microCT image of neolithic dog skull rendered in 3D (left) and shown in different projections (right).
Case Study: Cockchafer Beetle
Iodine stained Common Cockchafer imaged with high resolution settings.
