Shivani Kanabar

NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine

Shivani is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine. She completed her medical degree at the University of Birmingham in 2022, graduating with Honours and with the prestigious Owen Wade Distinction in Research. During medical school, Shivani joined the lab of Professor Alice Turner and led a large systematic review of outcomes of patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with PD1 and PDL1 immunotherapy. Shivani also worked in the lab of Dr David Bending, investigating PD1 ligand signalling dynamics using Nr4a3-Tocky technology. These projects inspired her to pursue further research opportunities in translational immunology alongside her clinical training.
Having completed an Academic Foundation Programme in Birmingham, Shivani is training in Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine in the Thames Valley. She joined the labs of Professor Timothy Hinks (Nuffield Department of Medicine) and Dr Fränze Progatzky (Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology) in 2025. Her research interests revolve around interrogating novel immune mechanisms and their relationship with difficult to treat phenotypes of respiratory diseases. Currently, she is investigating the role of lung glia in the pathology of severe airways disease.
