The transcription factor, interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) is a regulator of antiviral and inflammatory responses, and promotes pro-inflammatory function in macrophages. Gain of function mutations in the IRF5 promoter confer heightened risks of developing autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Over the course of my DPhil it is my aim to characterise the functional role of IRF5 in the context of intestinal inflammation.
